about

Dayton, Ohio may not be the first location that comes to mind when one thinks about Funk music. However, Dayton musicians such as Ohio Players, Zapp and Lakeside contributed enormously to the commercial success of the genre in the 1970s. Dave Zup wrote “Try” to pay homage to both his home state’s rich musical history and his father, a man who spent the 1970s and 1980s grooving on stages across the Midwest. This 3-minute dance jam blends Zup’s smooth delivery as an emcee with a Funk-inspired beat by The Dreamcatchers. Zup uses his time on the mic to address people who deal with their insecurities by putting others down. “Try” further suggests that no matter what anyone tries to do or say, Dave Zup is not going anywhere.

lyrics

Big man talking numbers
Do you feel above us when you fabricate your truth
Thinking that you run the summer
Let’s see who’s running when it comes time to make a move
Here’s your invitation to just

Try if you want
You could try me if you want to
Try if you want
You could come try if you want
Yeah now
Try if you want
I’m not leaving either way this here is just what I do
Hey it’s nothing new
Nothing new

Friend or foe
Yo state your biz
It’s hard to keep up with Lil that and Lil this
I never practice hate but do retaliate
If you send me a shot then you’ll receive a case
Incase you didn’t know we put the funk first
I’m from Ohio come see how funk works
Knock on lumber if you say you would
Not get chopped down man you ain't that good
And the second part of this for the ladies
Girls with the motives and ultimatums
With no trust you know can’t fund love
How we supposed to loan you a piece of us if we don’t get it back
It’s too taxing I don’t have interest
You want a perfect picture then stay on Pinter
Well I’m not even gonna go there
Just know the next man ain’t the last
Leave the phone there

Try if you want
You could try me if you want to
Try if you want
You could come try if you want
Yeah now
Try if you want
I’m not leaving either way this here is just what I do
Hey it’s nothing new
Nothing new

I can’t see the future I’ve been living day to day
Who am I to tell anybody what to say
What to think
What to feel
How to act
Who to love
You try and chase power you gon’ end up unplugged
We’ve got to move on
Why you want to try and stay mad
She celebrate her body
Why you trying to degrade that
Everybody need to eat
Why you try to smash the whole plate
Do anything online but never try to face to face
What a shame

Try if you want
You could try me if you want to
Try if you want
You could come try if you want
Yeah now
Try if you want
I’m not leaving either way this here is just what I do
Hey it’s nothing new
Nothing

Try if you want
You could try me if you want to
Try if you want
You could come try if you want
Yeah now
Try if you want
I’m not leaving either way this here is just what I do
Hey it’s nothing new
Nothing

Try
Try
Try
Try
Try
Try
Try
Try
Do or do not
There is no try
Try
There is no try
Try
Try
Try
There is no try
